If you’re looking to weld austenitic stainless steels, the AWS Class ER308/308L Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) wire and flux are your go-to options. These materials are specifically crafted for welding popular grades like 304, 304L, 308, and 308L. They offer fantastic weldability, impressive corrosion resistance, and solid mechanical properties, making them perfect for high-temperature jobs. The ER308/308L classification is all about keeping the carbon content low, which helps prevent carbide precipitation and boosts the alloy’s resistance to intergranular corrosion.
When it comes to the chemical makeup of ER308/308L filler materials, you can expect a maximum carbon (C) content of 0.03%, chromium (Cr) ranging from 19.5% to 22.0%, nickel (Ni) between 9.0% and 11.0%, and molybdenum (Mo) up to 0.75%. You’ll also find manganese (Mn) between 1.0% and 2.5%, silicon (Si) from 0.30% to 0.65%, phosphorus (P) and sulfur (S) both capped at 0.03%, and copper (Cu) up to 0.75%. This unique blend of elements ensures that the filler material can create strong, corrosion-resistant welds even in high-temperature settings.
